What is diversion?

• Diversion is whenever products are sold outside of their authorized chain of distribution.

Isn’t it cheaper to buy diverted proessional product through sources other than salons?

• NO. Salons purchase direct from the manufacturer or an authorized professional distributor. Large retail chains cannot buy direct from a professional beauty company and, therefore, purchase through illegitimate sources (It’s Big Business). When diverted products are sold through an unauthorized retail outlet, it hurts the salon business and ultimately the overall beauty profession.

Why do unauthorized retail outlets stock diverted products?

• We have grown accustomed to “one stop shopping.” The product is there, because the consumer requests it. When enough people ask the manager of an unauthorized retail outlet for professional products, he/she responds to the consumers’ needs.

Is it safe to buy diverted products?

• It’s risky. Retail stores usually price diverted products higher than the suggested retail price, which is typically a lot more than you would pay at a salon or spa. In most cases, products are expired, have old packaging, and the “only guaranteed if sold by a professional salon” statement is covered up, or sometimes, scratched off.

• Sometimes, products have been diluted or switched out all together to make a better profit, which is the most dangerous for you as the consumer. With counterfeit products, you have NO IDEA what is in that bottle…it could be shampoo mixed with ANYTHING!

• There are organized counterfeiters that will “copy” professional brands and sell them to retail stores. They can make some VERY convincing replicas and make a huge profit doing so. They can make one bottle for less than $1, then sell it to retail chains for as much as $5-$10 each. This can be very dangerous for the consumer (There are several court cases every year).

What can I do to help fight against diversion?

• Don’t buy diverted products found in an unauthorized retail outlet, and tell your friends about the possible dangers. If you have already purchased professional products from an unauthorized retail outlet, return them for a refund. Remember, we do not stand behind products purchased through unauthorized retail channels.
